Buckcherry / Econoline Crush Stone Scruggs ![]() They like us,they really like us! LA's latest rock stars set a precedent of honoring the humble mid Atlantic with their decadent presence supporting the debut in 1999. They visited a half dozen times into last year, documented by your intrepid critic thrice. This marks the second review since May of the Econo Crush/Buckcherry tour-they were at the Harbor only a few weeks into it. Additionally, the buses pulled into the 930 in DC the previous nite; my presence in Fells Point at a different gig precludes review-see accompanying article. The Rec in Towson is all ages, but Buckcherry's lascivious frontman is R-rated. Canadian openers Econoline Crush are more PG-13 but no less raucous-pronounced "rawk-us", devil sign aloft, dude-musically. The Cult is the obvious influence, particularly in reference to singer Trevor Hurst. Hell, Ian Astbury himself was to appear on their Restless/EMI debut until Billy Duffy objected. The reunion, y'know? The record was produced by Cult vet Bob Rock and Buckcherry producer John Travis. This explains a lot of the band's breaks. Unfortunately, the Buckcherry fans weren't buying it; most didn't bother attending until they finished their opening set. Sucks for them. God forbid you check out a band that isn't on the radio playlist. Why they aren't yet is another example of the inconceivable inconsistency of the medium, as the band is as commercially accessible as anyone. Buckcherry appeared before a capacity crowd before eleven o'clock with Time Bomb's opener "Feel The Frontside" and continued with three more off the new one, including "Slammin", which appropriately enough was recently heard on the WWF's "Tough Enough," and relatively older song "Goin Ridin." Three from the debut were offset by "Place In The Sun" followed by punker "Dead Again" and instant classic "Porno Star" with its cerebral chorus "dont you know we fuck for money, I'm a big dick motherfuckin Porno Star." You go, boy. That was followed by sensitive ballad "For The Movies." Gotta love it. "Fastback '69" was a brand new spanker about the 'stang. The new "Underneath" and the old "Crush" closed the set before the quartet returned with another unfamiliar one,"Anything." When Josh then 'fessed "I love the cocaine", you knew it was all over. Just as well. It was after midnight and time for the teenyboppers to get their newly corrupted behinds home. Then again, it's only rocknroll. But I like it. -Stone Scruggs |
